This is the adaptation paradox: the structures, routines, controls, and mental models that help an organization succeed can later prevent it from responding when the world changes. The organization becomes increasingly efficient at reproducing yesterday.

What Is Organizational Adaptation?

Organizational adaptation is the capacity of a human system to change its patterns of attention, interpretation, coordination, decision-making, and action in response to meaningful shifts in its environment.

1. Sensemaking

Sensemaking is the ability to perceive changes, detect patterns, question interpretations, and build a shared understanding of what is happening. It begins with observation but does not end there. An organization may collect vast amounts of data while remaining unable to recognize what the data means.

Surface symptoms

The visible signs appear first in performance language: slow response, missed opportunities, declining innovation, frustrated teams, growing customer dissatisfaction, recurring transformation failure, and rising execution friction.

Because these symptoms are visible, they attract immediate action. Leaders launch initiatives, restructure teams, replace tools, or demand faster delivery. Yet the symptom layer rarely contains the cause.

How to use the assessment

Avoid turning the scorecard into another KPI trap
